In general terms, this proposed law seeks to provide greater protection to animals destined for supply compared to the Federal Animal Health Law. In March of this year, a bill was presented to the Jalisco Congress that seeks for the first time to establish animal protection and welfare for animals killed for consumption, which have been the most unprotected animals in our regulatory framework. WHAT IS THE INITIATIVE ABOUT?: The initiative presented by Congresswoman Claudia Murguía Torres and thanks to the work of Animal Equality Mexico, seeks to provide well-being to all animals destined for supply or consumption without making distinctions or exclusions.

It represents a milestone in the history of animal Ca Cell Numbers protection in our country, not only because of the number of animals that are killed in the state of Jalisco, it is also the first initiative presented in the country to be so explicit in the protection of farm animals, which does not refer animal welfare to official Mexican standards and seeks to guarantee it from the production units. HOW MANY ANIMALS WOULD BE IMPACTED IF APPROVED?: Jalisco is the main livestock state in Mexico with 143 slaughterhouses and/or slaughter houses and 13 TIF establishments where more than 200 million animals are killed each year WHAT WE ARE SAYING: “Mexico is lagging behind in animal protection and welfare of animals used by the food industry compared to other countries, such as some members of the European Union.

Since, at the national level, Jalisco is in the first places of livestock production, this proposal has the commitment to advance in the matter.” – Dulce Ramírez, Director of Animal Equality in Mexico. In general terms, this bill seeks to provide greater protection to animals destined for supply compared to what the Federation has in the Federal Animal Health Law, in addition to aligning with the reforms promoted by Animal Equality Mexico in 2020 in Zapopan and in 2019 to the Penal Code of Jalisco , managing to classify cruelty to animals on farms as a crime. The initiative in Jalisco is part of our national efforts to combat animal cruelty since our legislative department in Mexico is currently working on various legislative initiatives at all levels of government to achieve this.
