This article was originally published in Vietnamese by Konia Group , one of SketchUp's distribution partners. Konia Group interviewed architect Trinh Vu Cuong, founder of D Architecture & Construction , to discuss Le's Cham Hotel and its importance to the Vietnamese architectural community. Mr. Cuong studied at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture (UAH), Vietnam. After graduating, he contributed to many design projects and developed his professional knowledge and design style. In , Mr. Cuong moved to Nha Trang, a coastal city northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, where he founded D Architecture & Construction. What is your favorite software? "I have previously used design and construction software such as AutoCAD and GstarCAD, and rendering software such as Lumion, ds Max and V-Ray . Now I have completely switched to using only SketchUp for design." Project: Le's Cham hotel Project: Le's Cham hotel Le's Cham Hotel is just meters from the sea at Bach Dang Street, Tan Lap District, Nha Trang. It is an international hotel that opened its doors in early , and guests from all over the world have praised its design. Vacationers love that you can hear the soft crash of waves outside, whether from the waiting room or a bedroom window.

The hotel has a unique and glamorous personality, while generating a feeling of comfort and welcome. Le's Cham hotel has several rooms designed to meet all the needs of visitors, such as balconies facing the city or the sea that provide comfort and offer an optimal panorama. In addition to the rooms, the hotel has conference spaces, swimming pools, gyms, spa rooms and two restaurants with capacity for up to guests each; all the necessary services so that you never want to leave. Preparation D conducted a topographic survey prior to beginning conceptual design to evaluate the natural conditions at the proposed construction site. Based on the site survey and climate observations, they used D modeling to orient the building to face west, the direction that receives the most sunlight. The past inspires the future The client wanted the design to emulate the traditional architecture of the Champa era of Vietnam. The ancient kingdom of Champa has been the inspiration of many contemporary artists and designers for its ancient temples and stone carvings. The client's goal was to have an architectural work that pays tribute to the history of Vietnam. Buildings in the Champa region were made of staggered or zigzag bricks connected by beeswax. For Le's Cham Hotel, D designed a brick-look façade with unique angles present in Champa-era brick design. The building's stepped glass façade creates zigzag folds, mimicking ancient brick patterns. This unique aesthetic makes the building stand out and creates a functional composition for the guest rooms. D model in SketchUp of the building's facade. The Le's Cham hotel completed its grand opening in , with its glamorous façade tem with a degree oblique angle The second and third floors of Le's Cham hotel have restaurants and conference areas. Combined with the front planter, the oblique glass architecture unifies the design from top to bottom. This complex design posed some construction challenges, but ensured a congruent design throughout the structure. D modeling software Throughout the project, from idea to construction, D used SketchUp to check the feasibility of design ideas and minimize errors. The architect can easily manage the design process with Vietnam BIM Objects (VBO) and SketchUp. VBO is a best-practice documentation methodology that helps transform D objects created in SketchUp into building elements such as walls, columns, beams, floors, and more. Creating industry-standard drawings helps automate the construction process.
