In January of this year, a very controversial topic was debated here on the blog : the use of animals as guinea pigs, especially in universities.

And isn't the theme there again? Of course, he always will be. But the fact is that a controversy involving dogs, medical students and the practice of vivisection at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) has caused a stir on Orkut.

The case is that photos of the kennel at the UFG Faculty of Special Data  Medicine, allegedly taken by “animal defenders”, are circulating on the internet, attached to a complaint against mistreatment of dogs. The photos are shocking, the dogs look sick, the kennels are dirty and in one of them it appears that one animal is feeding on another (which is reinforced in the text of the complaint).

See the photos and the complaint

What the defenders denounce is vivisection, which was being practiced by medical students on the Faculty's dogs. For those who haven't asked Google for help, vivisection is the act of dissecting a living animal, for scientific-pedagogical purposes. According to the words of the complaint itself, “the animals are opened and closed several times and by several students and then they are placed back in the kennel, along with the other animals, with sutures and more sutures, returning from anesthesia (when it does not end). during the procedure).”

The UFG released today (11) a note of clarification, in the name of the director of the UFG Faculty of Medicine, professor Heitor Rosa, denying all the allegations. According to the note, the kennel complies with the standards of the Superintendency of Sanitary and Environmental Surveillance of the State of Goiás and the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine and operates under the supervision of a veterinarian.

UFG clarification note

The professor defends the use of animals for learning, as “what is not acceptable is using humans as guinea pigs (Nazi practice) to test a new surgical technique or operation, as well as new drug treatments. ”

Defenders want action from the Public Ministry, mainly due to the fact that the animals were donated to the UFG by the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ) in the capital, Goiânia, and are therefore protected by the State.
