Postilla's teaching mission is also served by illustration and typography. More than three quarters of the sermons contain a woodcut related to the topic of the Gospel text. The Gospel text that opens each sermon is typed in a striking Schwabach font. In order for the Bible verses included in the sermons to stand out from the rest of the text, the individual verses of the Gospel text are typed in bold and with a fracture larger than the main text, and other quoted Bible verses in a round rotunda. The church order emphasized the use of vernacular speech in sermons. Sorolainen followed this guideline scrupulously. While the titles of the holy days had been in Latin in previous Gospel books in Finnish, Sorolainen was the first to title the holy days in Finnish. He also translated into Finnish all the Latin quotations included in his sermons, which come from church fathers and other learned authors.



For this article, I have gone through all the word articles from the Old Finnish Dictionary with examples of the first part of Sorolainen postilla. A total of 1,615 such articles were collected from the alphabet range a ‒ perstauta , which is now online. A good seventh of the words (226) appear in print for the first time in Sorolainen's postilla. Words that Sorolainen brought to the literary language and remained in use are, for example, the nouns thing , order and travel , the adjectives every year, murea (characterizing a field!) and pagan , and the verbs tell , fattenand take a nap.
